Dwayne Johnson, better known to the world as The Rock, wrestled in
a sold out show at the Blasidell Arena in June. Now, the former Hawaii
resident is back in town but this time he’s talking movies.

The wrestling star turned movie star arrived in the islands last
week. He’ll be here for the next month and a half as he works on a
couple of film projects with local ties.

    Be Cool on set interview

Thursday, December 23rd, 2004

Ok I am not sure if I already posted this or not but this is an on set interview from Be Cool

THE ROCK
Rock, what challenges have you faced on this, flexing comic instead of action muscles? The
Rock: Sure. Well, for me, I’ve always been a big fan of comedy. I love comedy, and any chance I get an opportunity to do a comedy, I take it. With “The Rundown”, I had a chance, and with a movie like this, for sure. And, you know, challenges to where there are so many other actors involved who are really, really good actors. You know, and you get to test your timing against them, and who aren’t necessarily comedians either

The Rock sued by former personal manager over contract dispute

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been slapped with a lawsuit by his former personal manager, who claims he’s owed a horde of cash by the star. Marty Adelstein recently filed the lawsuit claiming the musclebound screen star agreed to pay him 7.5 percent of the money he earns from his upcoming Spy Hunter film. In the suit, Adelstein claims the star already made $5 million during production alone. And Adelstein states he hasn’t been given his expected cut from the proceeds. Representatives for The Rock have yet to comment.

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Ok since there is a lawsuit pending against Rock I thought I would dig up some info on exactly who this Marty Adelstein is. So I posted some info about him below:
Marty Adelstein is recognized as a trailblazing agent who has recently turned his focus to management and producing. A founding partner of Endeavor, he helped launch the agency in 1995 and became a driving force in establishing Endeavor as one of the top agencies in Hollywood. During his six-and-a-half-year tenure, he personally represented such motion picture and television clients as David E. Kelley, Bonnie & Terry (more…)

THE ROCK AND DUNCAN WANT TO RE-TEAM

Friday, November 19th, 2004

DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON and MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN have decided to make another movie together, after discovering they’re neighbours.
The muscle-bound screen stars teamed up for THE SCORPION KING and quickly became firm friends.
Duncan says, We recently found out we’re neighbours, and he was like, ‘So, when can I come over to your house?…’
“I was like, ‘Just come on down, you live two minutes up the street.’”
Duncan admits he’s looking forward to the opportunity to show off his new trim body in any project they work on together.

Diesel, Rock duke it out for title of top action newcomer

Wednesday, November 17th, 2004

Seagal, Van Damme, Lundgren, Norris. For decades names like these have dominated the world of action movies. But, mighty warriors as they are, they cannot carry the torch forever. Someday, the grease-coated black hair in Steven Seagal?s ponytail will fade to gray, and with it, the end of an action era. So who will be there to answer the call as the new leaders of the genre? The Last Action Heroes have pinned their hopes on the emergence of two talents: Vin Diesel and The Rock. Who is the better choice to anoint as action?s best hope? Let?s discuss (more…)

We Want Answers: The Rock

Sly?s in decline, Jean-Claude?s a joke, and Arnold?s got himself a desk job. Meet the man who?s picking up the action slack. He?s The Rock, the people?s movie star.

Maxim, April 2004

By Paul Semel

So what should we call you? Mr. Rock? The? Dwayne Johnson? Sir?
Big Daddy.

How often do people make jokes about your Johnson being a Rock?
Pretty often. And then they ask for proof.

Whoa, slow down. You were always asking people if they could smell what you were cooking. Can you actually cook?
I am the worst cook. But I can make a hell of an omelet. [See sidebar.]

So where did that line come from?
I was doing an interview with, of all people, Gennifer Flowers. She was asking me about some court case going on at that time, and I said to her, ?If I was the judge and the jury, nine times out of 10 it would be a hung jury?if you smell what The Rock is cooking.? I have no idea where it came from. (more…)

    Welcome to the Jungle Review

Welcome to the Jungle
Reviewer Philippa Hawker

January 1, 2004

Welcome to the Jungle (M)
General release
Rating: ***

The Rock doesn’t have a name that suggests restraint, charm, or a light comic touch. But that’s exactly what’s on show in Welcome to the Jungle, a lively and affable movie with deftly handled action sequences and confident comic performances.

There’s a brief cameo, at the beginning of the film, from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who exits a nightclub just as the character played by The Rock arrives, and greets him with a single sepulchral phrase: “Have fun.” American reviewers have taken this to be a kind of action hero baton-pass, a star anointing his successor in the Highly Paid Hulk department. The Rock looks more comfortable in a suit, however, than the Governor of California ever has and he has a more wryly self-deprecating way with a line. On the evidence of this film, he doesn’t need permission from Arnold for anything.

The Rock - born Dwayne Johnson -is a World Wrestling Federation headliner who made his feature debut in The Mummy Returns, and starred in The Scorpion King. Here, he plays Beck, a high-powered debt collector-cum-bounty hunter, a polite but insistent muscle man who listens to radio cooking shows and, for reasons that are never explained, doesn’t care to use guns. He likes to give his targets the opportunity to co-operate with him, always offering them “Option A” (do as he says) or “Option B” (face the consequences).

After collecting a debt from an NFL star - a tough assignment, given that the man is hanging out in a nightclub with his entire offensive line - Beck is given what he hopes will be his last job: retrieving his mob boss’s son from the Amazon and bringing him back to face the music for some unspecified transgression. After this mission, he plans to retire from the muscle business, and open his own restaurant.

But once he arrives in a remote Brazilian outpost, he realises this assignment is a little trickier than he thought. El Dorado is a mining town presided over by the self-appointed despot Hatcher (Christopher Walken, in a performance that is as light, offbeat and calculatedly eccentric as you could hope for, yet ever-so-slightly on auto-pilot: he can do deliciously unpredictable, scene-stealing riffs in his sleep. It’s a deftly executed crowd-pleaser, but he’s not stretched.)

Hatcher has no interest in letting Beck leave with his target, young Travis Walker (Seann William Scott, all annoying cocksure bravado and comic assurance), because he knows that the kid is on the trail of a priceless ancient artefact. The local bartender Mariana (an under-used Rosario Dawson) is prepared to help Travis but has an agenda of her own.

With a flurry of fist fights, car crashes, kickboxing smackdowns, bullwhip displays and uncomfortable confrontations with baboons, as well as a regular injection of one-liners and gags, Welcome to the Jungle takes off. Writers R.J. Stewart and James Vanderbilt and director Peter Berg haven’t made a film in the same league as Romancing the Stone or The In-Laws (the 1979 original), but Welcome to the Jungle is doing its best to work the same adventure-comedy territory - and enjoying the ride.
